Albums of my life: 1987
This is the fourth part of my Albums of my life series and this time we are in 1987.
In this series I am ranking albums that are most important to me for each year since I was born. I won't rank them by how good I think they are and neither will I include albums that I never really listened too even though they might be excellent.
As always, I'll start with...
Honourable Mentions
- Tom Waits - Franks Wild Years - I am a huge Tom Waits fan but this isn't my favourite of his and it's not that important to me. It's still a great record though because Tom Waits can't make bad records.
- Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason - Same as for the album before. I am not a huge fan of the post Waters albums because they are lacking something the albums before had. Still a great listen though.
Now it will get wild. Or not, you decide.
4. U2 - The Joshua Tree

U2 and frontman Bono in particular get a lot of shit nowadays. Some people call them overrated. Well, I can't really argue about post 2000 albums because I don't think I listened to any of them, but if you call The Joshua Tree overrated you might be an elitist snob. It's fantastic. The songs on it were omnipresent in the 90s and I always enjoyed them when they were played on the radio.
Also I grew up where the streets have no names. Like literally. Our address was just the town name and a number. The streets still have no names there.
3. Guns'n'Roses - Appetite for Destruction

I mean, come on, that album was and is big. Guns'n'Roses were a bit of a gateway band into more heavy rock music and Slash was my guitar hero.
Because I barely knew any others back then.
Welcome to the jungle.
2. EAV - Liebe, Tod und Teufel
This Album is packed with hits. Of course you only know them when you are from Austria and you might know them in Germany or Switzerland too. But EAV, man, they are so fucking great.
Of course as kids we loved the cartoonish comedy style the hilarious videos and the funny lyrics we didn't really understand. Also they heavily used cartoon tits on their album covers which was very exciting for us.
As a kid An der Copacabana was fun because they made fart noises there. As an adult, you listen to Sandlerkönig Eberhard and you start to cry.
But I'm afraid this album only makes sense if your German skills are top notch.
1. Anthrax - Among the Living

Among! Among! Among!
For the 30th anniversary in 2017 Anthrax played this album in full during live shows and I had the priviledge to attend the Vienna show. And it was incredible. And believe it or not I only started listening to this album that very year and it still became so important to me that I just had to rank it at #1. Because it's a perfect thrash metal records with such a dense atmosphere. There's a whole story about why it sounds as it sounds, I'm not going in to that, just look it up.
Best metal record of 1987 and it still is a benchmark.
Among! Among! Among! Amooooooong!
